Jean Berube
Director
Jean Berube graduated from the University of Maryland and has devoted her entire professional career to education at
Gallaudet University, the only university in the world for the deaf. As a professor at Gallaudet since 1965, Jean created
and founded the renown "Personal Discovery Program" in 1979. This is a unique program which teaches respect and valuing
of self, others, and nature, helps each realize his/her own personal beliefs, and helps develop positive
self-esteem, leadership, and teamwork through hands-on activities in workshops, seminars, and through classes for credit.
The Discovery Program includes a sequential set of active training events with both individual and group challenges,
problem solving situations, writings, drawings, stories, quotes, and individual and group performances that are targeted
to develop various group and personal qualities, i.e., knowing how to work in a group, finding ways to communicate with
others, discovering each others personal "gifts," learning how to follow as well as leadership skills, overcoming
one's complexes and fears, developing patience and tolerance and respecting other people's opinions and feelings.
Jean Berube first brought the Personal Discovery Program to Moscow and Yaroslavl in 1993. Over the last fourteen
years, parts of the program have been introduced in schools, counseling centers, the Raoul Wallenberg University, winter
camps, orphanages, and prisons. The Discovery staff has worked with hearing, deaf, blind, people with cerebral palsy,
young people with cystic fibrosis, integrated children-parents groups, groups of psychologists and counselors, teachers
and able bodied hearing middle school and high school aged students.
The Personal Discovery Program center in Russia is "Center Podval," where throughout the year Russian trainers work
with different groups. The Program has already helped thousands of people to believe in themselves and taught them to
find a way out of hopeless situations by building self-esteem, problem solving skills and team and personal leadership
skills.
The Pendill Fund is fortunate to have Jean Berube helping its efforts on behalf of children and youth in Russia.
